MINUTES OF MEETING

April 23, 2014

 

The monthly meeting of ANC 5A was held on April 23, 2014.  The meeting was held at the UDC – CC Backus Site room 125.  The meeting started at 6:53 PM.  The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Edwards.  A quorum was established by roll call.  The following Commissioners were present at roll call:  

 

Commissioner Frank Wilds,     5A01              Commissioner Ronnie Edwards 5A05             Commissioner Grace Lewis    5A02                         Commissioner Sandi Washington  5A07          Commissioner Adrian Jordan  5A03 

Commissioner Angel Alston    5A08

                                                             

                                                                                     

There were six (6) Commissioners present. A quorum was established.  The Commissioners voted unanimously to adopt the Agenda and March meeting minutes.  

 

CREATIVE MINDS INTERNATIONAL PCS

            Creative Minds PCS is a new charter operator located near the armed soldier’s home. It specializes in Arts, Foreign Languages & project based learning. It currently has an extensive waiting list and focuses on inclusion. Commissioner Edwards asked if the LEA has reached out to the Lincoln Cottage, which they affirmed they had. A motion was made by Commissioner Wilds to support the school and its location,

Seconded by Commissioner Lewis. There was discussion and concerns brought to the commission by Commissioner Alston. Motion to Approve Passed 3-0-3

 

 

PUBLIC SAFTEY UPDATE

            Officer Lucas of the 4th District MPD presented to the community an update on public safety that stolen autos are up 106% YTD. He reiterated that it is important for residents not to leave items visibly in cars. Overall PSA 405 is not heavily violent, and most crimes are property crimes. As of today, there have been 18 burglaries this year, which matches last year’s total. 

 

 

COUNCILMEMBER DAVID CATANIA

            We were joined by Councilmember David Catania, Chair of the Committee on Education for the Council of the District of Columbia, who provided an overview on the history of the Education Committee. He has visited 134 schools across the city since being appointed the chair of the Committee. Lastly, he spoke about retention and the history of social promotions within DCPS.

SCHOOL BOARD PRESIDENT MARK JONES

            SB President Jones announced that the city has finally hired an ombudsman, which was one of his biggest issues since joining the School Board. He also wanted the community to know that the board is now focusing on graduation requirements and the expansion Diploma offerings.

 

 

EDUCATION QUESTION & ANSWER SESSION

            Councilmember Catania and School Board President Jones fielded several questions from the community. Such as:

 

1.      How do you increase equity in schools east of the park?

2.      Do you support the changes to the school boundaries as proposed?

3.      Why is the opening of Brookland Middle School being delayed?

4.      Please explain how you can attain additional diplomas?

 

 

ANC REPORT

   COMMISSIONER ALSTON put forth a motion to ask the National Park Service to add a path with lighting. PASSED Unanimously.

 

COMMUNITY REPORT

       Natasha Brown, Humanities Council of Washington DC, announced they are awarding grants for residents who want to document their history. Information can be found on WDCHumanities.org

       Talks about DPW and trash cans, recycling as well as community dog signs
